Anxious Times
The News Section of StopAnxiety.org
Key Finding: Nearly 60% of Americans say mental health has become more important to them — yet fewer than half have ever accessed care, and that number is declining. Anxiety rose 9.3% in a single year. The gap between awareness and action is widening.
Every May, Mental Health Awareness Month brings fresh conversation about the importance of mental health. And every year, the data delivers the same uncomfortable truth: Americans are more aware of mental health than ever — and more anxious than ever at the same time.
The numbers
The 2026 Rula State of Mental Health Report surveyed more than 2,000 U.S. adults and found anxiety rates of 63.7% — up nearly 10% from 2025. The American Psychiatric Association found that 38% of Americans planned a mental health resolution for 2026, up 5% from the year before. More than 80% say they recognize mental health’s importance. Yet only 47.4% have ever accessed mental health services — down from 50% the previous year.
Why the gap is growing
The barriers are structural. Therapist waitlists stretch for months. Costs are rising while incomes stagnate. Half of Americans have already cut back on health and wellness spending. The same financial pressure that is driving anxiety is also preventing people from getting help for it.
What awareness gets right — and wrong
Reducing stigma matters. Normalizing the conversation matters. But awareness without accessible tools leaves people stranded — knowing they are struggling without knowing what to do about it. The most impactful shift would pair awareness with practical, low-cost, evidence-based tools people can start immediately.
What this means for you
If you are in the gap — aware you’re anxious but unable to access professional help — you are not without options. Vagus nerve exercises are free. The 4-7-8 breathing technique takes 30 seconds. Exercise matches medication for anxiety in peer-reviewed research. Magnesium costs less than a coffee per day. Awareness is where it starts. It doesn’t have to be where it ends.
